چکیده

Abstract We use a mathematical model to investigate the effect of basal topography and ice surface slope on transport deposition sediment within water-filled subglacial channel. In our model, three zones different behaviour occur. zone furthest upstream, variations in lead under wide range conditions. this first zone, even very small gradually varying undulations (~5 m amplitude) can modelled Deposition is concentrated downstream gradient ridges, upstream troughs. The thickness steepness sheet has substantial impact rates, with shallow profiles strongly promoting both magnitude extent deposition. second all transported downstream. Finally, third close margin characterised by high rates existence these implications for esker formation dynamics environment.

ICESat measurement of Greenland ice sheet surface slope and roughness

The Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) in its 8 day repeat orbit mode provided data not only on the along-track surface slope, but also on the cross-track surface slope from adjacent repeat ground tracks. During the first 36 days of operation, four to five such repeat orbits occurred within 1 km in the cross-track direction. This provided an opportunity to use ICESat data to measu...

Eurasian ice-sheet dynamics and sensitivity to subglacial hydrology

Ice-stream dynamics are strongly controlled by processes taking place at the ice/bed interface where subglacial water both lubricates the base and saturates any existing, underlying sediment. Large parts of the former Eurasian ice sheet were underlain by thick sequences of soft, marine sediments and many areas are imprinted with geomorphological features indicative of fast flow and wet basal co...

New boundary conditions for the West Antarctic Ice Sheet: Subglacial topography of the Thwaites and Smith glacier catchments

[1] Airborne radar sounding over the Thwaites Glacier (TG) catchment and its surroundings provides the first comprehensive view of subglacial topography in this dynamic part of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) and reveals that TG is underlain by a single, broad basin fed by a dendritic pattern of valleys, while Smith Glacier lies within an extremely deep, narrow trench. Subglacial topography...

Subglacial lake drainage detected beneath the Greenland ice sheet

The contribution of the Greenland ice sheet to sea-level rise has accelerated in recent decades. Subglacial lake drainage events can induce an ice sheet dynamic response--a process that has been observed in Antarctica, but not yet in Greenland, where the presence of subglacial lakes has only recently been discovered. Here we investigate the water flow paths from a subglacial lake, which drained...

Determining Ice-Sheet Uplift Surrounding Subglacial Lakes with a Viscous Plate Model

We develop a viscous model of plate bending suitable for studying ice-sheet flexure due to subglacial lake filling and draining, and apply this model to determine the area of ice-sheet uplift surrounding a subglacial lake. The choice of a viscous model reflects our interest in Antarctic subglacial lakes, which can fill and drain on time scales of months to decades. Experiments with idealized la...
